Supporting Roma communities in contact with child protection
Supporting Roma communities in contact with child protection
There is an increasing number of Roma children entering the care system in England. From just 30 children in 2009, the number rose to approximately 600 by 2023. This sharp increase reflects deeper, systemic issues that demand urgent attention.
Join an upcoming workshop that will support social workers and social care practitioners to enhance their knowledge and skills in building trust and fostering positive outcomes for Roma families.
In this interactive session we will consider cultural and historical context of Roma people's experiences with social care, barriers to engagement and practical strategies for supporting and engaging with Roma families.
The workshop will include a Brave Space discussion about bias and inclusivity where participants can ask challenging questions, share experiences, and reflect on biases.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of taking part in this event, participants will:
- Understand the cultural, historical, and socio-economic context of Roma communities from Eastern Europe.
- Identify key barriers that Roma parents face when engaging with local authority services.
- Develop practical skills and culturally responsive strategies to effectively support Roma families.
- Reflect on biases and assumptions to foster inclusive practices within local authorities.
